The wine stayed on its lees throughout the fermentation, and we bottled the wine with a minimal amount of sulfur. Ten barrels were produced. The Herron Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is a wine that is delicately textured with bright stone and citrus fruits.

Maître de Chai

Michael Mara Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Sonoma

Y

2013 Maître de Chai Michael Mara Chardonnay

Varietal: Chardonnay

Region: Sonoma

MSRP: $70

Notes: Caramel, Lemon, Oak, Peach

Description: Farmed by Steve, the soil of this vineyard is the result of what we believe to be a cataclysmic landslide that cascaded rocks and volcanic soil onto the valley floor. It took Steve years to clear the vineyard enough to actually be able to plant vines. The vineyard is an undulating croupe of rocks and red soil that makes for an incredibly distinctive and powerful wine. Michael Mara is 100% Chardonnay, from Old Wente clone four. It possesses a natural richness and a beautiful bright acidity, as we use completely neutral oak and very little sulfur throughout its élevage. With only 2 barrels made, this wine is hand labeled and hand bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

Maître de Chai

Stampede Zinfandel

With soils composed of decomposed granite, the Stampede Vineyard lies on a parcel that overlooks an old riverbed on one side, and the Clements Stampede rodeo grounds on the other. The model for the wine we have produced from this vineyard is an ode to the style of Paul Draper of Ridge Vineyards—one of the most influential wineries in California's history. The balance and finesse Paul has been known to employ on the field blends and old vine plantings for Ridge throughout the years has been the leading inspiration for this wine. The wine is fermented with its native yeasts in a mix of open top, whole cluster and barrel fermentations. The wine aged in neutral cask for 11 months. Three puncheons and 12 barrels produced.

2018

Broc Cellars

Wirth Zinfandel

Zinfandel

Green Valley

Y

2018 Broc Cellars Wirth Zinfandel

Varietal: Zinfandel

Region: Green Valley

MSRP: $30

Notes: Black Cherry, Dark Chocolate, Oak, Strawberry

Description: Zinfandel first came to California during the Gold Rush. It grows beautifully here - thriving in California’s soil. We love the older expressions of Zinfandel before it got a bad name in California for being high in alcohol and overly ripe. Wirth Vineyard’s Zinfandel is different from our Vine Starr Zinfandel – it is slightly more concentrated with more tannins, notes of clove, cherry and beautiful acidity. The fruit is very special and we are excited to share it with you once again. We destemmed the fruit into 5 ton stainless steel open top fermenters, where it naturally fermented. Then aged in 60 gallon neutral French Oak barrels for 10 months.

The Sangiovese comes in each year as one of the most expressive grapes throughout harvest - showing beautiful aromas of cinnamon and clove. Amore Rosso is a play on words with our Love Red - the Italian sister. We wanted to make a chillable, accessible, high acid, natural and food friendly (pizza) wine!

SOGI

Cabernet Pfeffer

Lime Kiln AVA

Y

2019 Broc Cellars SOGI

Varietal: Cabernet Pfeffer

Region: Lime Kiln AVA

MSRP: $29

Notes: Black Cherry, Pomegranate, Soil, Strawberry

Description: This is our second vintage working with Cabernet Pfeffer. We know that this varietal tends to have aggressive tannins, so we decided to ferment it using carbonic maceration. It was fermented in concrete, then pressed to neutral French oak barrels to allow the wine to breath. The wine was aged for 9 months. Cabernet Pfeffer is thought to be a child of Cabernet Sauvignon and Trousseau Noir but it is not proven. Some people believe it is Gros Verdot, but no one is certain so that is likely untrue. Dr. Pfeffer was a horticulturist in San Jose who identified the variety and named it! (Pfeffer is also the name for pepper in German). Sogi is a nickname for the area where the vineyard is located in relation to our winery. Broc Cellars is located on 5th and Gilman Street in the Gilman district of Berkeley. The vineyard is located South of Gilman – hence SOGI ! The image is a Sugi – which is a cedar ball in Japan hung outside of sake breweries that we admire on our trips to Japan. We loved t

Notes: Black Cherry, Blackberry, Plum, Raspsberry, Strawberry

Description: Grapes went through partial carbonic fermentation, which combined with lighter tannins from the 2016 vintage, makes for an easy drinking light bodied elegant wine. 2016 had very low yields, almost half then typically expected. Both dry-farmed vineyards are over 65 years old and are located just a mile apart from each other, between Napa and Suisun Valley. Valdiguié was formerly known as Napa Gamay in California. Wirth is planted on steep-sloped, iron-rich soils, while Frei is located closer to the valley floor and has more acidic soils.

Sauvignon Blanc

Contra Costa County

Y

2019 En Cavale Sauvignon Blanc

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

Region: Contra Costa County

MSRP: $26

Notes: Butter, Citrus Fruit, Grapefruit, Green Apple, Lemon

Description: From an organic vineyard on the sandy shores of the Sacramento Delta (to which Wolfgang can sail) and made in a natural wine co-op in the Richmond Marina, this is a coastal wine, albeit urban and gritty. Chad Hinds of Methode Sauvage notoriety has partnered here with the incomparable Wolfgang Weber to make this zippy Sauvignon Blanc that keeps it natty enough for Rock Juice, while still making my classic-SB-loving mama happy. Fermented with a bit of skin contact, then pressed into neutral barrels. No fining or filtering, so she’s a bit cloudy. Super bright and punchy, a little tropical, citrusy and downright delicious.

Y

2019 Scribe Estate Riesling

Scribe

Carneros Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Napa Valley

Y

2017 Scribe Carneros Chardonnay

Varietal: Chardonnay

Region: Napa Valley

MSRP: $40

Notes: Citrus Blossom, Honey, Pineapple

Description: We first made this Chardonnay in 2007 from our breezy vineyard, planted with Robert Young clone, three miles down the road from the Scribe Estate. The dense, black, California clay and slightly cooler Carneros climate tend to delay ripening until late in the harvest season.

2019

Blue Ox

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc

Santa Ynez

Y

2019 Blue Ox Cabernet Franc

Varietal: Cabernet Franc

Region: Santa Ynez

MSRP: $37

Notes: Plum, Red Pepper, Strawberry

Description: Cool-climate Cabernet Franc done with 10% whole cluster. Picked on the leaner side, this is a more savory expression of the grape. Gentle extraction from a combination of punchdowns and pumpovers twice a day for the duration of fermentation. Aged in neutral French oak for 9 months. 4 barrels were made. We've always seen Cab Franc as the misunderstood Bordeaux varietal, too often pushed into the 14% ABV realm where all varietal character is obscured. We tend to personify the grape as the misunderstood artist in the corner smoking a cigarette. So it seemed like a fitting image to pair it with Hemingway's reflections on an era of excess in Parisian Bars.

2019

Blue Ox

Cabernet Pfeffer

Cabernet Pfeffer

Lime Kiln AVA

Y

2019 Blue Ox Cabernet Pfeffer

Varietal: Cabernet Pfeffer

Region: Lime Kiln AVA

MSRP: $33

Notes: Black Pepper, Raspsberry, Violet

Description: One-third of the grapes were left whole cluster to lend a semi-carbonic element to the wine and soften the often aggressive tannins of this variety. We were very careful with the cap management because we did not want to over extract the wine. It was punched down twice a day simply by wetting the cap with our hands for the first half of the fermentation leading into one punchdown a day as it got closer to dryness. The wine was then pressed into neutral French Oak and aged for 7 months. We produced 8 barrels. The Wild One is the original outlaw biker film, featuring Marlon Brando in his iconic leather jacket and cap alongside fellow members of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The gang descends on the town of Hollister--just a few miles from where our Cab Pfeffer is grown--for a round of mid-50s rabble-rousing. It puts things in perspective when you learn that this vineyard was originally planted nearly 50 years before this movie was made.

2019

Blue Ox

Carignan

Carignan

Mendocino County

Y

2019 Blue Ox Carignan

Varietal: Carignan

Region: Mendocino County

MSRP: $30

Notes: Cherry, Cranberry, Rose Petal

Description: The grapes were harvested at 22 brix and fermented whole-cluster with no punchdowns or pump overs for 7 days. The grapes were sealed in a container as they began to ferment. It was pressed to stainless steel at 10 brix where it finished fermentation. The wine was barreled down and aged on the lees for 6 months in barrel before bottling. We produced 3 barrels. The goal here was to create a light, fun style of red wine that acts a bit like a rosé, but with more weight. This wine is all about juiciness with a bit of a brambly edge. The semi-carbonic handling makes this wine taste fresh, approachable, and focused. Best served cool. For that reason we named it after one of our favorite Seijun Suzuki films: Youth of the Beast. A boldly stylized Japanese gangster flick from the mid 60s that’s flashy and unpredictable.
